This Croatian hotel “White Lady” seems very sure of its target clientele.
The eminent historian Professor Hobsbawm, who lives in South End Green, Hampstead, and recently celebrated his 94th birthday with the publication of a collection of essays drawing together a lifetime’s political thought, worked at night under a pseudonym. His job? To cover the blossoming London jazz scene of the 1950s.
“It was a funny business: I could do it because I was teaching at university in the evenings, and so I could go out after nine at night when the lectures finished and mix with jazz players and night birds,” he recalls.
