basquavita:

further wanderings on main - hawker’s delight
that whole stretch of main street from just north of broadway to just south of king ed is chock full of a practically overwhelming number of delicious looking eateries.  and yet, during my solo wanderings, i will often forego trying a new spot to go visit an old favourite for a dirt cheap, spicy, coconutty, piping hot, brothy trip to flavour country.
highlights:
malaysian/singaporean cuisine (laksas, noodle soups, rich curries with rice, hainanese chicken)
most dishes are in the $4;50 to $6.50 range, only the lamb curry exceeds $7.50
large portions, speedy service
the broths carry enough heat to breathe the life back into you on a shitty vancouver day
tons of veggie/vegan options
photos and descriptions on the wall to help you pick
yesterday i opted for the mee siam, which is described as “thin rice noodles served in sweet and sour and spicy peanut gravy garnished with tofu puff, egg, tofu, chives and bean sprout”.  what this description neglects to mention is that that pile of dark brown poop on top is actually mega reduced carmelized onions.  so good.
my advice: get the fried veggie fritter.  it’s like $1.12 for two and they come with this gingery rice vinegar dipping sauce that’s got a great zing to it.
the mee siam plus the fritter plus tip came to $7.
