A 17 year-old African American young man was shot and killed last month in his gated community in Florida by a white neighborhood watch captain who’d found him to be “suspicious.” Trayvon Martin had taken a break from watching the NBA All Star Game to walk to a convenience store and pick up some snacks for himself and his 13 year-old brother, Chad.

Neighborhood Watch captain George Zimmerman saw Martin on his way home and called 911 to report a suspicious person. But rather than await the arrival of the police, Zimmerman decided to take action himself. The resulting confrontation ended in an innocent, African American young man dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. Trayvon Martin’s family is calling for Zimmerman’s arrest.

“‘What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles,’ Crump said. ‘A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad.’ Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community’s newsletter. Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family’s request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.”

I have been working in the finance unit this week, which means I work in a steel-walled safe of a room. It’s hot, there is zero air flow, my hands get dry from handling so much paper. But the worst part is I have to listen to one top 40 radio station. Songs I didn’t know are now stuck in my head and keep returning to me at all hours because I have been forced to listen to them over and over again all day. Also, what is with them calling Madonna MDNA? Is it supposed to sound like MDMA? And why would they make that joke on this awfully mainstream station? I say this but I actually have no idea who comprises this station’s target/demographic, because it’s just so incredibly shitty that I don’t know who tunes in other than my coworker. Also, I didn’t know “The Mainsteam” actually existed anymore now that we all have access to Youtube and Itunes. However, I have now learned that apparently The Mainstream is actually alive and well! Though I am not sure it has secured a majority as far as tastes are concerned. But like all dying empires it somehow maintains the illusion that it does represent the majority until long after it has ceased to hold sway.

Note that many of the songs played on this top 40 station are not necessarily more terrible than anything I listen to by choice, but the programming format is such that all songs played become terrible. The experience is grating, repetitive, incessant, relentless. Time sweats, cracks, and more of the same comes out from the peach pit within.

A snob, I am. And like all snobs, ignorant.

A learning experience: my bubble cannot protect me inside the steel box. Result: cultural penetration. Aghhhh!

dang sun. generally speaking, anything ‘pibil’ is automatically queued up to get stuffed in my face, and this is no exception. i was worried this thing would be too doughy but the house made torta bread is pretty nice and flat, making room for ALLA DEM STUFFINGS.

they also had fresh churros, 2 for $2. i haven’t had a fresh churro since mom and pops left LA. let me tell you, it brought a tear to my eye.

also they have hibiscus ice tea.

As an indoor option, I find this variety of vertical garden preferable to the now-ubiquitous Blanc style—beautiful when large-scale and out of doors, but often displayed as boring rectangular statements of What Is Technically Possible indoors. I find the frame of some indoor vertical gardens limits the organic influence of the plants on the interior structure. Why constrain the creeping tendrils and leaves within a sturdy, visible frame? To me, that’s not a statement I want to be making in my living room. But this one above, yes, I like what it says.
